Weymouth hit back to stun Saints

Wake up call

WEYMOUTH manager Mark Molesley was delighted as his side responded to a ‘sucker punch’ of an equalising goal to beat St Neots Town 3-1 in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

Brandon Goodship had given the Terras the lead in the 34th minute through a penalty when Saints’ captain Luke Knight was sent off for a handball on the line.

Jack Bradshaw equalised for St Neots in the 71st minute before Stephane Zubar won it for the Terras in the 85th minute and Jordan Ngalo wrapped up the points with the last action of the match.

Molesley said: “I am delighted, it is that stage of the season where points are more important than the performance and I think that was the case.

“It was a hard-fought win in the end, we never had it our own way at all even after the sending off.”

The first-half had been quiet until Knight handled the ball on the line with Weymouth attacking from a corner, the Terras thought the ball had crossed the line before the penalty was awarded which Goodship tucked away.

Molesley said: “We thought it was over and then we did not know if the linesman was flagging for a goal or a penalty.

“Well done to the linesman for spotting it.”

After the goal, Weymouth had numerous chances with Ben Thomson bringing a great save from Finlay Iron in the Saints’ goal.

Molesley said: “We did not want to take our foot off the pedal, I do not think we did, we just huffed and puffed a little bit and never really got the foothold in the game that we would have liked.

“We were winning 1-0 so you are not tempted to change it too early because we were solid and did not look like conceding but at the same time we were not creating as many chances as I would have liked against 10 men.”

Jack Bradshaw got the equalising goal for St Neots Town in the 71st minute with a perfectly placed free-kick that went round the wall and nestled in the bottom corner.

Molesley said: “The goal was a sucker punch and it was a wake up call for us.

“Fortunately the boys responded again and they did not give up and we had a little bit of a reshuffle and then fortunately we got the two late goals.

“Fortunately that goal gave us a little bit of a spark and what we needed and we were lacking that spark.”

The win was the Terras fourth league win in a row, when asked if that run gives his side more confidence Molesley said: “We should be full of confidence and that is probably why we got even more frustrated with ourselves.

“We are hard to please, the group is hard to please because the way we play we want to have a good performance as well as a win.”
