Saturday's South & West action review

By David Watters

The final day of the EVO-STIK League Southern Division One South & West season had very few issues to settle, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Only the positioning of the top five below long-time champions Hereford FC was left to sort out. In the end, Salisbury FC finished as runners-up and will host Evesham United in one play-off semi-final while Tiverton Town take on West Country neighbours Taunton Town at Ladysmead in the other.

Steve Claridge`s Whites finished second after winning 1-0 at Bideford, thanks to a goal from Tommy Wright five minutes after the break.

Taunton had to beat North Leigh and hope Salisbury lost to clinch second, but they were beaten when Roger James scored for the Oxfordshire hosts four minutes from time.

Tivvy warmed-up for the derby semi-final with a 3-1 home win over Paulton Rovers with goals from Levin Landricombe, Jamie Price and Jamie Short – Reeko Best replying.

Fifth-placed Evesham warmed-up for their battle with Salisbury with a 4-2 win at Testwood Park against AFC Totton, for whom Nat Sherborne bagged a brace in a losing cause as Mark Magee did likewise for the visitors, Carl Brown and Paul Fahy adding the others.

Champions Hereford signed off a wonderful campaign in front of a crowd of 4,125 at Edgar Street, who saw the Bulls win 4-0 against Winchester City.

Top scorer John Mills from the spot after 8 minutes, Jamie Edge on the half-hour mark, Jamie Oates on the hour-mark and then Brad Williams 7 minutes from time were on the mark as celebrations began at the final whistle.

Elsewhere, Ben Brooks scored twice to help Larkhall Athletic to a 3-1 home win over seventh-placed Swindon Supermarine, while Ben Whitehead did likewise for Didcot Town as they won 3-2 at Cossham Street against eighth-placed Mangotsfield United.

Jack Ball from the spot and Ciaran Greening scored the goals that earned Yate Town a 2-1 win at Fairfax Park against already-doomed Bridgwater Town.

The team who go down with the Somerset outfit, Wantage Town, lost 2-0 at home to Bishops Cleeve, for whom Shane Bumphrey in the very first minute and then Jordan Stoddart seven minutes from the end, were on target.

Louis Kellaway, Jamie Stokoe and Sam Davidson sealed a last-day win for Wimborne Town 3-1 at home against Slimbridge, and Jack Freeman`s 10th minute effort proved enough for Shortwood United to win at home to Barnstaple Town and finish a respectable ninth.
