Saturday's Central Division action review

By David Watters

There was only one issue to settle on the final day of the EVO-STIK League Southern's Division One Central season, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And it saw Egham Town make it through to the play-offs for the second season in succession after beating third-placed Barton Rovers.

Their win on Easter Monday at Beaconsfield SYCOB had lifted the Sarnies into fifth place, and the last-day scenario was that AFC Dunstable and Kempston Rovers were sitting a point behind them ready to pounce should Gary Meakin’s men falter.

As it was, Dunstable drew at Northwood as Kempston thrashed relegated already-relegated Histon. Egham could have finished fourth had Marlow lost by a couple of goals but they won at Uxbridge, so it was only ever going to be a win that was needed.

And they achieved that at the Runnymede Stadium with goals from Brendan Matthew after 33 minutes and a nerve-settler from Jordan Berry 16 minutes from time.

Louis Bircham gave Northwood a 38th minute lead at Chestnut Avenue, and although Terry Griffiths salvaged a draw for AFC Dunstable with a 64th minute equaliser, it wasn`t enough.

And it`s a similar story for the Walnut Boys, who have enjoyed a fine first campaign at this level and won 4-1 on the final day at Hillgrounds against the beleaguered Stutes with Jake Newman bagging a brace either side of a Ben Shepherd effort and Ashley Fuller added the other.

Marlow finished level on points with third-placed Barton Rovers but behind by three goals after winning 2-1 at Honeycroft against Uxbridge, courtesy of Chris Ovenden after 47 minutes and Jay Welch 10 minutes from time – Anthony Thomas replying four minutes later.

Second-placed Farnborough will host Egham in the play-off semi-finals and warmed-up in style, hammering Beaconsfield SYCOB 6-1 at Cherrywood Road, with Perry Coles and Jamie Cureton both helping themselves to hat-tricks.

Elsewhere, John Frendo scored both goals as champions Royston Town signed off with a 2-0 Garden Walk win over Hanwell Town, while Tony Williams also scored twice for Arlesey Town in a 3-2 win at Love Lane against already-doomed Petersfield Town.

Aylesbury FC's disappointing season at least ended on a high by inflicting a 5-0 defeat on visiting Fleet Town in which Aston Goss scored two.

Bedford Town beat the Moles` neighbours Aylesbury United by the odd goal in five at the New Eyrie with Lee Roache, Leroy Griffiths and Devante Stanley outgunning Sonny French and Bruno Lobo De Brito for the Ducks.

Potters Bar Town finished in their highest position at this level after a fine 4-0 win at Chalfont St Peter with Michael Murray, Chris Doyle, Ashley Nathaniel-George and Carl McCluskey on target.

Ashford Town (Middx) signed off with a 2-1 win at Kidlington, courtesy of late goals from Alex Fisher from the spot and Joe Green after Callum Harvey had given the Oxfordshire side a 27th minute lead.
