Saturday's Central Division action review

By David Watters

Royston Town hold a five-point lead over second-placed Farnborough in the EVO-STIK League Southern's Central Division and have a couple of games in hand after away wins for both on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Crows won the game of the day against a Marlow side who drop to fifth as a consequence of a 2-0 defeat, with Matt Nolan after 17 minutes and Josh Castiglione six minutes from time being the targetmen.

Farnborough won 1-0 at Arlesey Town, thanks to a 20th minute Ed Smith penalty.

AFC Dunstable are a somewhat distant third now, being twelve points behind Farnborough, despite winning 3-1 at Creasey Park against Potters Bar Town, who hold top five hopes themselves.

A goal from Jermaine Hall right on half-time gave the hosts the advantage. But Joe Bennett levelled five minutes after the restart, and it wasn`t until the final four minutes that the hosts pulled clear with BJ Christie`s brace.

Barton Rovers are fourth and they edged out Aylesbury United by the odd goal in five at Sharpenhoe Road.

Connor Calcutt`s first half effort for Rovers was cancelled out by Josh Baines, only for Charlie Smith to restore the home side`s advantage on the hour-mark. But Tre Mitford`s spot-kick pulled the Ducks back on terms 15 minutes from time, only for Calcutt to pop up with the winner eight minutes from time.

Neighbours Kempston Rovers and Bedford Town are also in the hunt for a top five spot, although Rovers will be disappointed to have dropped two home points to Northwood.

However, it could have been even worse as they trailed to a Myles Stephenson brace until two minutes into stoppage time when Robbie Goodman popped up with the Walnut Boys leveller after top scorer Danny Watson had given them a 30th minute lead.

Bedford pulled to within three points of their neighbours after surviving a scare at rock-bottom Petersfield Town before coming through 3-2.

Ben Sawyer had the Eagles ahead after just seven minutes and then, after Andrew Phillips had missed a spot-kick, a Jemale McKenzie-Lowe brace in the 37th and 45th minutes sent the visitors into the break 3-0 up. The Hampshire strugglers did cause a few nerves when they pulled two back from Ryan Woodford and Billy Connor penalties but the Eagles held on.

Petersfield look virtually doomed and second-bottom Histon`s revival came to an end with a 3-2 defeat at the Glassworld Stadium against Beaconsfield SYCOB.

Charlie Losasso bagged a brace for the visitors after Callum Mapley`s 38th minute equaliser to Elkanah Sibanda`s 35th minute opener for the Stutes – James Carman`s spot-kick putting them back in front on 72 minutes.

Third-bottom Aylesbury FC pulled four points clear of the drop zone after Lewis Hayden`s 63rd minute goal eventually proved enough at home to Egham Town.

Elsewhere, Romario Jonas and Mark Bitmead were on target as Ashford Town (Middx) won 2-0 in their derby at Honeycroft against Uxbridge, while Dan Wilkinson scored the only goal to earn Fleet Town a 1-0 victory at Calthorpe Park against Hanwell Town.

Anclet Odhiambo and a late Callum Harvey goal saw Kidlington to a 2-0 win at Chalfont St Peter in the day`s other game.
