Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Chippenham Town are eight points clear at the top of the EVO-STIK League Southern's Premier Division table after Saturday`s round of matches, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Bluebirds won 1-0 at Stratford Town, courtesy of a penalty six minutes from time converted by top scorer Andy Sandell.

However, second-placed Merthyr Town lost by the same scoreline at fifth-placed Slough Town, a crowd of 757 at Arbour Park seeing Chris Flood`s goal 20 minutes from time prove decisive.

Leamington are back in third place after they were another 1-0 winner, this time at The Meadow against Chesham United, thanks to Jordan Goddard right on the stroke of half-time.

Hitchin Town dropped to fourth after they were held to a 2-2 Top Field draw by a Frome Town side who are now seventh.

A crowd of 570 saw Darren Jefferies put Frome in front seconds before the break. Brett Donnelly equalised five minutes after the interval, only for Jake Jackson to restore the visitors` lead on 66 minutes. Danny Webb levelled again for the Canaries just four minutes later.

The top five have a healthy nine-point advantage over the chasing pack which is led by Banbury United, who could only share a 1-1 draw at home against Weymouth.

The Terras took an early third minute lead from the penalty spot before George Nash equalised after 22 minutes and neither side could find a winner.

Kettering Town and Frome are in the pack with Banbury that needs just one or two of the teams above them to have a blip in form to get into play-off contention.

But the Poppies did manage to pick up three points at Latimer Park in front of 560 in a 1-0 win against Kings Langley, thanks to a James Hall goal two minutes after half-time.

At the other end of the table, bottom-markers Cinderford Town made it back-to-back wins with a 5-2 home hammering of St Neots Town, who are only a couple of points above the drop zone themselves.

The Foresters are still in need of a couple of snookers to get out of trouble but they will be happy with this win, thanks to a hat-trick from Karnell Chambers topped and tailed by Elliot Ford and Josh Nelmes, with in-demand Jevani Brown notching another brace for the Saints.

Second-bottom Hayes & Yeading United were the only team in the bottom four to lose, Lee Stevenson`s goal four minutes from time sealing a victory for visitors King`s Lynn Town.

Cambridge City are now only two points behind St Neots after winning 2-1 at inconsistent Redditch United.

Charlie Morris had the Reds ahead from the 32nd minute until Ben Robinson equalised 12 minutes from time, and then Goldy Capella popped up with a stoppage time winner for City.

Cirencester Town picked up a point from a 1-1 draw at City`s landlords, St Ives Town, whose Jack Higgs cancelled out Matt Coupe`s 10th minute opener in the 26th minute.

Dorchester Town pulled themselves six points clear of the bottom four after a 2-0 Avenue Stadium win over Dunstable Town, thanks to Ollie Bassett after 45 minutes and on-loan Olly Mehew four minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game.

Basingstoke Town won 2-1 at the Camrose against Biggleswade Town in the day`s other game.

Nick Bignall had the Waders in front after less than five minutes but Aaron Jarvis six minutes before the break and Ashleigh Artwell 15 minutes from the end saw Terry Brown`s side through.
