Royston Town lead by five points after a 2-0 Garden Walk win over Fleet Town, thanks to a Dan Rousel own goal on the hour-mark and Ryan Ingrey`s 86th minute second.
Second-placed Farnborough enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 Cherrywood Road win over fourth-placed Barton Rovers.
Perry Coles gave Boro an 11th minute lead that Ed Smith doubled nine minutes later. But it wasn`t until the final seven minutes that they managed to add to their tally through Nic Ciardini and Sam Shaban.
Third-placed Marlow suffered a 3-0 defeat at the New Eyrie to a Bedford Town side who are now tenth.
A crowd of 437 saw Lee Roache give the Eagles a 15th minute lead that Andrew Phillips added to on the half-hour mark. Kenny Orenuga made sure with a third 18 minutes from time.
With fifth-placed Kempston Rovers` game being off, AFC Dunstable took full advantage to move to within two points of the Walnut Boys after edging out Egham Town by the odd goal in seven at the Runnymede Stadium.
Josh Humbert gave the visitors a great start with a goal inside the opening minute. Bill Morgan added a second a minute before half-time, only for Louis Stead to pull the Sarnies back into the game eight minutes after the break.
But two goals in four minutes midway through the second half from BJ Christie and Courtney Massay gave the visitors a 4-1 cushion, although they were made to sweat in the end after Brendan Matthew and Chris Moore pulled two back in the last 10 minutes.
Potters Bar Town are level on points with Dunstable after winning 2-1 at Kidlington, who had shocked leaders Royston by beating them in midweek.
Garry Jones broke the deadlock to give the Scholars the lead six minutes after half-time, only for Anaclet Odhiambo to level in the 67th minute. Michael Murray won it for the visitors with just two minutes to go.
Those two hold a six-point gap between them and eighth-placed Aylesbury United, who went down 3-2 at Chalfont St Peter, whose Jake Cass gave them an eighth minute lead.
Lea Coulter eventually equalised in the 72nd minute but goals from Tyrone Pink after 83 minutes and Luke Maguire in the last minute stretched the Saints lead to 3-1, rendering Alex Collard`s second for the Ducks in the sixth minute of stoppage time as just a consolation.
At the opposite end of the table, Histon`s revival continues with a third successive win which lifts them to within four points of third-bottom Aylesbury FC.
The Stutes won 3-2 at Honeycroft against Uxbridge, whose Abobaker Eisa bagged a brace in the 11th and 23rd minutes to give them a 2-0 half-time lead.
But a Ben Yeomans brace on 56 and 74 minutes pulled the visitors level and then former Cambridge City boss Dan Gleeson won it for the Stutes with four minutes remaining.
Northwood and Beaconsfield SYCOB shared six goals at Chestnut Avenue, meaning that the visitors had scored 24 goals in their last five games.
It looked to be all over bar the shouting at half-time as SYCOB led 3-0 with goals from Ryan Hill after 27 minutes, Jack Lyons on 42 minutes and Callum Bunting right on the whistle. But Woods made a stirring comeback to level with goals from Gradi Milenge on 63 minutes and a Louis Bircham brace on 69 and 80 minutes.
SYCOB could have won it in the end, but after James Budden was sent-off for bringing down Hill, Borja Loeches-Teixera saved Aaron Berry`s spot-kick.
