Midfielder kicks off coaching career

Mangos midfielder Jack Harris is taking his first steps into management as a coach at EVO-STIK League Southern Mangotsfield United.

The former Hallen FC and Gloucester City player started working with manager Dave Mehew and his number two Lewis Hogg at Cossham Street this week following his appointment on Wednesday ahead of their trip to Wantage Town on Saturday.

The former Tigers skipper in National League North joined the EVO-STIK League Southern South & West club after a couple of successful loan spells from Gloucester City. Despite struggling this term with a thyroid problem and only featuring twice, the 27-year-could play at the weekend and is being backed by Mehew to be a valuable addition to his touchline team, on and off the pitch.

In a statement on the Mangos website, Mehew said: “Jack still has a lot to offer the club. He’ll be the first to admit he isn’t 100 per cent due to his thyroid problem but that will clear up in time. People seem to forget the good start we had with Jack in the team. Of the five league matches we’ve lost, he’s only started in the Shortwood United and Hereford matches.

"So he is and will be, valuable as the season goes on and I believe further years to come once this problem clears up completely. He’s also a popular figure in the dressing room and can be a further link between me and the team. Most other clubs have three people involved in the staff area so this will help me and Lewis at training and having a different voice to consider."
