Mehew hails his new number two

Mangotsfield United manager Dave Mehew is hailing Darren Edwards after naming the fans' favourite as new number two for the 2017-18 EVO-STIK League Southern season.

Edwards - the successor to Lewis Hogg following his retirement at the EVO-STIK League Southern Division One South & West's Mangos - has played for a host of clubs including Tiverton Town, Bath City, Gloucester City, Chippenham Town and Yate Town and is in his fourth spell at Cossham Street.

In a statement welcoming the 33-year-old's appointment along with Steve Dix as goalkeeping coach, Mehew said: “I spoke to Darren at the end of the season and he seemed really keen and excited about taking on what is a new role for him. When we were speaking, it did remind me a bit of when I first took on a coaching role.

"He’s been in and around the Toolstation Western League and thinks there’s some potential there, so we are going to look at that, as I did when I first took over, finding some real gems to step up, it may only be one or two will work, but they are out there and we’ll give them a chance.

"Darren also has the experience of playing at Conference levels and most importantly, he’s been a winner especially at Bath. I was keen to bring in fresh ideas from outside the club and I’m sure Darren will do this for us, as conversations already, have brought up.”

Jack Harris has also agreed to carry on as the club's first-team player-coach working alongside Mehew and Edwards.

The Mangos boss added: “Jack`s role is important, especially if I’m off watching games. But Jack has made it clear this year he wants to get back playing to where he was early last season before his blood issues, that have cleared up thankfully.

"That was our best spell of the season and in my eyes we missed his ‘nous’ and experience on the pitch until the unfortunate health problems.”

* Steve Davies has made a swift return to Cossham Street after former Yeovil Town trainee and ex-Tiverton Town and Taunton Town defender Ed Weeks returned over the weekend. The former Forest Green Rovers and Gloucester City star, a replacement for the departed Matt Groves, joined Weeks at Shortwood United last season.
