The annual worldwide celebration of women's economic, political, and social achievements has taken place every year on March 8 since 1909 and the Puritans have pledged to support the new Women at the Game campaign in the UK by only charging females £1 at the turnstiles.
The brainchild of Jacqui Forster, who has given clubs like Banbury United support in her former role at Supporters Direct to become fan owned, the campaign aims to make women of all ages, backgrounds, ethnicity, ability and religious belief feel welcome and comfortable attending sports events and in particular men’s football from Non-League to the professional game.
Like the United supporters who travelled down to Frome last Saturday, pictured, Banbury United communications director David Shadbolt is backing the club's bid to boost their female fan base while supporting the aims and ideals of International Women's Day.
Looking forward to welcoming many more women to the Cirencester game, he said: "We will be working hard on the day so that women, some of whom have perhaps never been to a live game, feel welcome and enjoy the match in a supportive environment.
"Whilst we already have a number of women who come to our games on a regular basis, we are keen to join in this initiative and for more to enjoy games at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium."
