Wednesday night`s games in the Evo-Stik League South, West saw first wins of the new season for Evesham United and Cirencester Town.
Fancied Evesham had been held to a draw last weekend at Larkhall Athletic and it looked like heading for a goalless outcome at the Spiers & Hartwell Jubilee Stadium in front of 329 against Cinderford Town last night.
However, with less than 4 minutes to go, Matt Liddiard proved to be the hero for Evesham as he headed in the winner – and it came virtually at the same time he had helped earn his side a point against the Larks last Saturday!
On the opening day, Slimbridge had enjoyed a good 2-1 win at Paulton Rovers, while relegated Cirencester had been beaten 2-0 at home by Taunton Town.
The home side fell behind to an Alan Griffith penalty after 14 minutes, but the Swans struck back with a Joe Stokes effort just 3 minutes later.
Adam Connolly restored the visitors` advantage in the 32nd minute.
However, despite Slimbridge having more of the play, the only goal of the second period came in the last minute from Ciren`s Ben Whitehead, which made the final outcome a little harsh on the Swans.
