Ready for Evesham clash

Slimbridge boss Freddy Ward says his players are raring to go as they face Evesham United in the Southern League Premier West on Saturday, writes Oli Fell.

The Swans defeated Winchester City 2-0 on Wednesday to end a winless streak that stretched back to October.

Next up for Slimbridge is a trip to the Jubilee Stadium to face an Evesham side who are fourth in the table.

Evesham drew with Swindon Supermarine 3-3 on Wednesday, with ex-Slimbridge defender Will Wellon was sent off late on.

Ward knows all about Evesham and boss Paul Collicutt from his playing days at Bishop's Cleeve.

He said: “Most of the players know each other, so we know what they’re about. It’s always a tough game.

“There’s a reason they’re fourth in the league. I’ve got a few knocks from Wednesday night but the players are all keen to play in the game.

A goal in each half from Adam Mace and Jack Twyman handed the Thornhill Park side all three points against Winchester.

Ward was delighted to end the winless run, he said: “It went very well, I’m delighted with three points obviously.

“We rode our luck at times against a good team, but I could tell this result wasn’t far away. We were struggling to see games out, but it was different on Wednesday.”
