Gosport Borough’s winless league run stretched to 13 games as they suffered a 4-2 defeat against Redditch United at the Trico Stadium.
The Boro' remain three points behind closest rivals Dunstable Town at the foot of the Premier Division table. Now, however, they have only two games in hand and time is running out for Alex Pike’s troops in their fight to avoid relegation.
Borough stunned their hosts by taking the lead after only three minutes, through striker Craig McAllister. Buoyed by their early success the visitors piled on some early pressure. Pat Suraci fired in a decent effort but Redditch were level in the sixth minute.
The hosts launched a quick counter-attack and when Adam Page delivered a cross-cum-shot the ball was deflected into his own net by a Borough defender. And Redditch got their noses in front on 22 minutes when Ash Sammons curled a shot through a crowd of players and into the bottom corner.
Pike’s side responded well, though, with Ryan Pennery and Suraci forcing good saves from home goalkeeper Ethan Ross. Borough’s pressure paid off 11 minutes before the break when Pennery hauled them level.
Joel Jackson beat two defenders and pulled the ball back from the byline for the striker to convert. There was a fright for Pike’s troops at the start of the second half when a first-time shot was hacked over his own crossbar by a Gosport defender.
Another header went narrowly wide of the Borough goal as the home side upped the tempo. A Redditch goal looked increasingly on the cards and it duly arrived on the hour mark. Adam Davie headed in after Tristian Dunkley chipped the ball across the Borough six-yard box. There was a big let off for the visitors when a Dunkley shot cannoned back off the post.
Nevertheless, the home side wrapped up the three points eight minutes from time with a fourth goal scored by ex-Coventry City striker Andy Morrell.
