Silent tribute to late president

Paulton Rovers are holding a minute's silence before kicking off in the EVO-STIK League Southern on Saturday to mark the passing of their president Lawrence Rogers.

Saddened fans, players and officials will pay tribute to the popular stalwart when they host Yate Town at Athletic Field in EVO-STIK League Southern Division One South & West.

Known by all as Lar, the former Rovers player passed away on Monday evening aged 92, leaving behind children Les and Mary as well as a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In a statement paying tribute their late president, pictured presenting a player's award, the club said: "He was one of the stalwart's and trustee of Paulton Rovers and for over 50 years was one of the leading lights in changes on and off the pitch. Not the least, starting the club house development from being housed in a former RAF mission to the excellent facilities enjoyed by members today.

"The club extends its sympathy to his children Les, club finance director and former player, and daughter Mary, a former committee member and youth team secretary, and their spouses Rona and Chris as well his grandchildren and great grandchildren."

Rovers chairman David Bissex and secretary Andrew Harris also paid tribute to Mr Rogers in the local media after the club's 4-1 win at Bishop's Cleeve on Tuesday night.

The chairman told www.somersetlive.co.uk: "Lawrence was one of the founders of our social club and he was treasurer when I joined Paulton some 40 years ago.

"He was a tremendous stalwart and very active until the past 12 months or so, although he'd been attending recent matches despite being in poor health. Lawrence was a real good guy and our condolences go out to the family."

Harris added: "When I was watching Paulton as a kid I remember Lawrence being a big influence on the club and he was always involved in the end-of-season presentations. He will certainly be a sad loss to us all."
