Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

It`s as you were at the top of the EVO-STIK League Southern Premier Division table following Saturday`s round of matches, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Leaders Chippenham Town maintained their one-point advantage after a 2-0 win at Redditch United.

Recent signing Joe McClennan gave the Bluebirds a ninth minute lead before Will Richards made it 2-0 in the 37th minute and that`s how it stayed.

Merthyr Town remain second after they won 2-1 at the Avenue Stadium against lowly Dorchester Town.

The Magpies were unable to take advantage of an early first minute lead through Ben Wood, as Ryan Prosser pulled the Martyrs back on level terms within six minutes. And Eliot Richards` 18th minute second proved to be the winner for the visitors in front of a crowd of 469.

Leamington were held to a goalless draw at The Walks in front of a crowd of 601 by King`s Lynn Town and dropped to fourth as a consequence.

Hitchin Town are now third after they beat neighbours Kings Langley 2-0 in front of a crowd of 690 at Top Field.

Will Wright proved to be the Canaries` hero with a brace of penalty conversions in the 52nd and 86th minutes.

Slough Town are fifth after a 1-0 Arbour Park win against Dunstable Town, Simon Dunn`s 52nd minute effort proving to be enough for the Rebels to the joy of the majority in the 503 in attendance.

Banbury United are a point behind Slough in sixth after a 2-0 home win against fourth-bottom Cambridge City, who had won their last two matches.

Banbury would have the better of the first half and led 1-0 at the interval when Jack Self hit a superb volley into the top corner of the net on the hour mark. The Puritans were in control in the second half and would get the all-important second goal on 73 minutes when a corner was headed home from close range by Luke Carnell.

Chesham United, with games in hand, maintained their top five challenge with a 3-2 win against third-bottom St Neots Town at The Meadow.

Barry Hayles gave the Generals an early third minute lead that recent signing David Hutton doubled seven minutes later before Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson pulled one back for the Saints seven minutes after that.

That was the end of the scoring until stoppage time at the end of the game when Dave Pearce made it 3-1 to Chesham, only for Johnny Herd to make it a nervy last few seconds when he pulled a second back for the visitors two minutes later.

Elsewhere, Kettering Town`s inconsistency may cost them a play-off place but they did stay in front of tenth-placed Biggleswade Town after a 3-1 Latimer Park win in front of a gate of 511.

Liam Canavan gave the Poppies a 10th minute lead that Rene Howe doubled just before the break. Aaron O`Connor made it 3-0 and game over on 65 minutes, although Kettering-based Rob Parker did net a consolation for the Waders in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

An Alan Griffin goal 12 minutes from time earned Cirencester Town a massive three points at Stratford Town and a move out of the drop zone to a point above Cambridge.

Second-bottom Hayes & Yeading United picked up a useful point from a 1-1 draw at St Ives Town and are now four points below the safety-mark. They led through Connor Toomey`s 35th minute opener until 12 minutes from time when Jack Higgs equalised from the spot.

The day`s other game saw Basingstoke Town`s young side hammered 6-1 at the Camrose by Weymouth.

A brace from Charlie Davis and one from loanee Stuart Fleetwood had the Terras three-up by half-time. Aaron Redford immediately reduced the deficit, only for Dean Evans to make it 4-1 just past the hour-mark and then Fleetwood bagged a brace in the 64th and 81st minutes to complete his hat-trick.
