The Brakes won 2-1 at lowly Cirencester Town, thanks to two goals in two minutes midway through the first half from Jack Edwards and Courtney Baker-Richardson.
On-loan Will Hancox pulled one back for Ciren three minutes before the interval but the Brakes held firm for three big points.
Fourth-placed Merthyr Town dropped two home points in a 1-1 Penydarren Park draw with lowly Stratford Town, whose Ed Ahenkorah had them in front from the 33rd minute until Ian Traylor equalised in the 63rd minute.
Dunstable Town moved to within two points of fifth-placed Hitchin Town after a 2-0 win at second-bottom Cambridge City.
Danny Talbot gave the Duns a great start with a goal inside four minutes and Vences Bola added a second in the 21st minute.
Two teams looking to mount a top five challenge, Chesham United and Kettering Town, had mixed results.
The Generals, with a couple of games in hand on most around them due to their FA Cup run, had to make do with one point from their game at the Meadow against seventh-placed Redditch United.
They were gifted a 63rd minute lead when Mat Mitchell-King put through his own goal before Sam Youngs equalised with 13 minutes remaining.
Meanwhile, inconsistent Kettering won, eventually seeing off lowly Dorchester Town at Latimer Park thanks to a 73rd minute Rene Howe goal.
