The Rebels were grateful for a 74th minute Mark Nisbet goal for victory against third-bottom Cambridge City in front of a crowd of 656 at Arbour Park. And they increased their advantage as second-placed Leamington drew 2-2 at the Avenue Stadium against Dorchester Town.
Rob Thompson-Brown gave the Brakes a 15th minute lead in front of 461. A penalty from Jake Smeeton eventually pulled the Magpies back on level terms after 69 minutes, only for Richard Taundry to restore Leamington`s lead 10 minutes later. Ben Wood salvaged a point for the hosts with four minutes remaining.
Chippenham Town returned to third place after a good 2-1 win against inconsistent Kettering Town.
A crowd of 591 at Latimer Park saw the Poppies still awaiting their first home win. The Poppies took the lead three minutes into the second half through Spencer Weir-Daley. However, Chippenham drew level on 70 minutes when Andy Sandell scored following a corner. And the visitors won it three minutes from time through Alan Griffin.
Dunstable Town and Redditch United complete the top five but only the latter managed to win on Saturday.
The Duns suffered a 2-0 defeat at Stratford Town, whose Simeon Tulloch after eight minutes and a Jamie Sheldon penalty 11 minutes later proved enough.
The Reds edged out Hayes & Yeading United 2-1 at home with goals from David McDermott in the very first minute and Reece Hewitt eight minutes after the break – six minutes after Harold Joseph had equalised.
Hitchin Town were kept out of the top five after being held to a 1-1 Top Field draw by Weymouth, whose Stewart Yetton cancelled out Ben Walster`s 42nd minute opener nine minutes into the second half.
Seventh-placed Chesham United were also held to a 1-1 home draw by Merthyr Town, whose Kayne McLaggon put them in front five minutes after the break. Ryan Blake popped up with the Generals` equaliser seven minutes from time.
Cinderford Town remain two points adrift at the bottom after losing 4-0 at home to newcomers Kings Langley.
Josh Hutchinson and Steve Ward gave the visitors a two-goal lead at half-time and then a brace from Manny Duku on 64 and 75 minutes killed off the Foresters.
Second-bottom St Neots Town lost 1-0 at the Camrose to a 35th minute Ramone Rose effort for Basingstoke Town, while fourth-bottom Cirencester Town picked up a point from their trip to The Walks against King`s Lynn Town.
A crowd of 575 must have thought Ross Langworthy`s 66th minute effort would be enough for Charlie Griffin`s side until Leon Mettam popped up with a last-gasp leveller for the Linnets.
It was a goal at the death by Charlie Death that earned St Ives Town a point at home against Frome Town, whose Connor Roberts had given his side a 37th minute lead.
Inih Effiong gave Biggleswade Town an early fourth minute lead at the Spencer Stadium against Banbury United, whose Ricky Johnson salvaged a point on 56 minutes.
