Saturday's Central Division action review

By David Watters

Nine of the top ten teams won in the EVO-STIK Southern League's Division One Central on Saturday with champions Royston Town thumping Aylesbury United 5-2, writes Pitchero's David Richardson.

On the day Royston were lifting the trophy, Lea Coulter’s brace gave the away side a shock lead at half-time. But just eight minutes after half-time the Crows had turned it around to lead 3-2.

Kaan Fehmi went on to score his 99th goal for the club and then had a penalty saved for his 100th. Adam Murray netted a fifth and his second to round off a another fine day as the club were crowned champions.

Arlesey Town were the only team in the bottom half to win as they beat Chalfont St Peter 3-2 while Aylesbury were the only other team at the wrong end of the table to avoid defeat with a 2-2 draw at home to Ashford Town (Mx).

Max Herbert equalised five minutes from time but as a result of second-placed Farnborough’s 2-1 win over second bottom Histon, Aylesbury’s place in the division next season was confirmed.

Third-placed Barton Rovers earned a routine 2-0 win over Hanwell Town while Marlow, a place below them, won by the same scoreline at Northwood, who are four points above the drop in 20th.

Egham Town kept their play-off hopes alive, winning 2-0 against Hanwell Town with goals from Bajram Pashaj and a late goal of the season contender from Brendan Matthew.

Egham capitalised on AFC Dunstable’s 3-0 defeat at Kidlington, where all the goals came in the second half, to move up into sixth.

However, Kempston Rovers, just above them, showed few signs of budging from fifth place, scoring twice in the second half to see off Fleet Town 3-1.

Elsewhere Bedford Town stayed in eighth with a 4-1 win over Beaconsfield SYCOB in front of a crowd of 174 while hapless Petersfield Town’s point total is still to hit double figures after they lost 2-1 at Potters Bar Town.
