The Crows won 4-0 at Chestnut Avenue against third-bottom Northwood, who have now gone 11 games without a win, to move 15 points in front of second-placed Farnborough, who only have 15 points left to play for.
Adam Murray after five minutes and Scott Bridges seven minutes later had Royston two-up at the break. An own goal by player-manager Mark Burgess and Scott Neilson were the second half scorers.
Perry Coles` early second minute strike was all that Farnborough needed at the Rushmoor Community Stadium against Aylesbury United to keep the title race alive.
Barton Rovers, AFC Dunstable and Marlow currently occupy the remaining top five slots but Kempston Rovers and Egham Town both have realistic chances of making a challenge.
Rovers beat Marlow 2-1 away from home, thanks to Jimmy Hartley after 57 minutes and Connor Calcutt in the 83rd minute – all after Kelvin Bossman had put the home side ahead five minutes before the break.
AFC Dunstable boosted their goal tally with a 7-0 hammering of already-doomed Petersfield Town at Love Lane.
Jermaine Hall netted a hat-trick, with BJ Christie, Terry Griffiths, Brandon Carney and an own goal accounting for the others.
Kempston won 2-1 at Hillgrounds against Uxbridge, thanks to Jake Newman after 32 minutes and Jermaine Ivy 10 minutes after the break – Anthony Thomas having levelled from the spot right on half-time.
Egham were 3-0 Runnymede Stadium winners over Kidlington, courtesy of Brendan Matthew and Reece Yorke in the first half and a late Bajram Pashaj goal in the second.
Bedford Town`s outside hopes were dashed when they were held to a 2-2 New Eyrie draw by Hanwell Town.
Andrew Phillips` 8th minute spot-kick gave the Eagles the lead that Lamar Simpson levelled on 22 minutes. Phillips notched his and the Eagles` second just before the break, but Dean Allen equalised just past the hour-mark.
Histon are still hanging on in there in second-bottom spot and a 2-1 win at Ashford Town (Middx) pulled them to within six points of third-bottom Northwood.
Matt Allan and Max York gave the Stutes a 2-0 lead by the 19th minute, with Romario Jones `winning` the second half for the Ash Trees.
Elsewhere, Luke Maguire scored the only goal eight minutes from time as Chalfont St Peter beat Fleet Town at home and Arlesey Town won 2-0 at the Armadillo against Beaconsfield SYCOB, courtesy of Jack Vasey and Christian Tavernier goals in either half. Aylesbury FC and Potters Bar Town shared a 0-0 draw in the day`s other game.
