No doubt the post-mortem is well under way and I imagine a quick return to football after Saturday’s debacle at the Premier Plus Stadium is what would be best for St Neots.
However, whether the fixture computer has been kind to St Neots is an imponderable. On Tuesday Matt Clements takes his bruised team to Royston who are one of the two surprise packages this season in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division.
Promoted from the Division One Central at the end of last season as impressive Champions, Royston have taken their promotion by storm and are currently eighth in the table, just four points off a play-off place with matches in hand over most of the sides above them.
Prior to their home defeat by Chesham on Saturday, Royston had recorded five straight league victories scoring eighteen goals and conceding just one. So, this will be a chance for St Neots either to redeem themselves or face an early 2018 slump in form.
Statistically they have not won a match since 23rd December drawing two and losing two of their completed four matches in the past month.
The only significant squad change is that Johnny Herd, absent due to a one match suspension last Saturday, is available for selection although team skipper Luke Knight still has to miss one additional match prior to his return. Clements could ring the changes with his three utilised substitutes on Saturday, Lewis Irwin, Tom Wood and Stefan Broccoli all pushing for a return to the starting line-up.
However, fortunately one poor performance does not alter the pattern of the season and the side are undoubtedly capable of returning to its former form any time soon.
