October's performance kings named

By David Watters

Chesham United, Royston Town and Taunton Town are October's winners of the EVO-STIK League Southern's Team of the Month Awards.

After their league and cup results, few will argue with the trio being named this weekend as the third set of clubs to win the monthly competition, sponsored once again by the Southern League's title sponsors EVO-STIK to recognise and reward the top performers.

Like all winners, the clubs are now looking forward to being presented with cut glass trophies to record their achievements and 4.5L bottles of Bell's Whisky to celebrate their success with at upcoming fixtures by representatives of the league and EVO-STIK.

Top flight winners Chesham United enjoyed an impressive October by anybody's standards, taking seven points from nine in league action while winning four Emirates FA Cup, Buildbase FA Trophy and Southern League Challenge Cup ties.

Under the guidance of manager Andy Leese, the Generals started the month by beating Staines Town in the FA Cup before knocking Potters Bar Town out in the final qualifying round to reach the first round proper for the second year in a row.

Before that, they beat Potters Bar three days earlier in the Southern League Challenge Cup and finished off October with a 3-2 win at Ryman League Leatherhead in the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy.

Royston Town under manager Steve Castle were stand-out winners of the performance laurels in EVO-STIK League Southern Division One Central.

Still top after carrying their impressive form into November, the Crows won all four of their league outings while knocking Egham Town and Northwood out of the FA Trophy after first overcoming EVO-STIK NPL Premier Division Hitchin Town in the first round of the Southern League Challenge Cup.

Few will have missed the cup heroics of EVO-STIK League Southern Division One South & West winners Taunton Town and manager Leigh Robinson that have been thrilling fans at The Viridor Stadium.

Apart from battling to victory at Hemel Hempstead Town in an FA Cup replay to set up their historic first round proper encounter with National League Barrow, the Peacocks took maximum points from their two league outings and rounded off October by hammering Swindon Supermarine 5-0 in the FA Trophy having knocked out Larkhall Athletic at the start of the month in the preliminary round of Non-League's showpiece competition.
