Mighty underdogs are ready to rock!

By David Watters

Barton Rovers boss Jimmy Gray was confident his side could prosper as underdogs at Farnborough in Bank Holiday Monday's EVO-STIK League Southern promotion play-off final to ensure they'll playing at the highest level in their history next season.

The Mighty Rovers overcame Marlow Town 2-0 in Wednesday night's EVO-STIK League Southern Division One Central semi-finals before Gray backed his troops to live up to the tag again ahead of the 3pm kick-off against the runners-up at Cherrywood Road.

Hailing their season as a success whatever the outcome after taking the helm nearly a year ago, the former St Albans boss, pictured, said: “We go again knowing we a lot of people don’t think we will win. I’m sure as with our semi-final victory the lads will give everything and that is all I can ask off them. It’s a final and we are looking forward to the occasion and in those games anything can happen.”

Despite being likely to field a team filled with ex-Football League stars and being labelled favorites after their 4-0 semi-final success over Egham Town, Farnborough manager Spencer Day was taking nothing for granted before the showdown to decide who reaches the EVO-STIK League Southern Premier Division alongside champions Royston Town.

Day told supporters: “The play-offs are a lottery, we finished second but we know a lot of teams that have done that got close to winning the league and then don’t do so well in the play-offs. Barton have done so well to get to the final and they will be up for this game. We just have to see what happens.”
