Despite a brave effort at runaway league leaders Taunton Town, Swindon Supermarine succumbed to a late Matt Buse strike, having arguably been the better team for most of the game, to end interim manager Lee Spalding’s four game unbeaten record.
Before a ball was kicked, Spalding was robbed of the services of Brad Gray who missed the game due to illness, with Joe Sheppard, Ryan Morgan and Ryan Campbell also unable to participate due to injuries.
Reacting after the defeat, a very proud but disappointed Spalding praised his young side, “We played really well today and I’m really disappointed we never came away with something for our efforts.
I can’t fault my lads, overall I thought we were the better of the two teams but when you’re top of the league you often get that extra bit of luck. It was a bad goal to concede, it started from a throw in taken 10 yards further ahead than where it should have been taken, the lad has finished it well to be honest. We could have done better going forward, we had several good chances we failed to capitalise on.”
“There are more positives to take from today than negatives,” said Spalding reflecting on the defeat which saw Marine remain in ninth place in the league with games in hand, “ I can’t make any excuses with the injuries we currently have, the team out there today was capable of getting something from the game.
