WEYMOUTH striker Harry Baker is targeting another long run of wins ahead of his side’s Buildbase FA Trophy first qualifying round clash at Hereford tomorrow
The Terras saw a six-game winning sequence halted by Frome Town’s 2-0 win at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Tuesday night.
But former Gillingham Town forward Baker is looking to bounce back against the Bulls with a victory – just as his side did after losing their season-opening game against St Ives.
He told Echosport: “(Frome) wasn’t the greatest game and obviously that run has come to a bad end.
“But we’ve done well. We’ve lost our first game of the season and went on a good run, so maybe this defeat can start another one.
“We’ve just got to keep pushing as a side because we know we’ve got a good team, especially when we go forward.”
Weymouth travel to Edgar Street to face a Hereford side that has already beaten them 2-0 in the league this season.
The Bulls have also been in sparkling cup form, having won four qualifying games to make the first round proper of the FA Cup, but Baker says the Terras are ready to give Hereford “a right go” tomorrow.
He said: “That’s the good thing about this league. You get knocked down but you’ve got a game right around the corner.
“So we need to dust ourselves off and get back on with it. We’re ready to give them a right go.”
Baker himself has also been in excellent form, scoring four goals in five games. Asked what he put that down to, he felt it was a mixture of hard work and benefitting from the players around him.
He said: “It’s not all about me, they’ve obviously got to set me up. I’m obviously playing in a really good team.
“I’ve been working hard on the training ground and I’ve done alright, but there’s still a long way to go in the season.”
Baker was recently rewarded with a new contract after scoring 10 goals this season and the forward spoke of his delight at signing a fresh deal.
He said: “It’s all good. It’s been a good week apart from (Frome). I’m delighted with the deal and I just want to push the team forward and do what I can when I’m on the pitch.
“I’ve got a smile back on my face playing football, which is good. Obviously I was at a lower league team last season and really wanted to push myself this season.
“I’ve had a good start but I still need to improve and carry on.”
The Weymouth marksman was also keen to continue his learning curve while playing alongside fellow strikers Brandon Goodship, Matt Tubbs and Ben Thomson.
He said: “They’re great players. I’ve learnt a lot off Matt since he’s been here. He’s been great to me.
“Obviously Brandon’s been in really good form so I’m learning all the time and just picking up different things and trying to improve my game.”
