Harris eyes defensive improvement

Farnborough Test

A 5-2 reverse on Monday consigned Redditch to back-to-back Evo Stik South – Premier defeats, but Reds boss, Tim Harris, saw positives against tough opposition, which he hopes will translate into three points on home turf on Saturday:

“We scored two goals away from home at a side who had only conceded seven goals at home all season, and we’ve created some excellent chances; however, we must improve our shape in defence to stand a chance of winning football matches.”

Farnborough will be full of confidence after kicking off 2018 in perfect style, beating Basingstoke Town in a 4-3 thriller at The Rushmoor Community Stadium; however, having conceded 63 goals this season – only bottom-two sides, Dunstable Town and Gosport Borough, have leaked more – Harris is hoping recently-signed forward, Edji Mbunga, and attacking midfielder, Adam Page, can cause the opposition’s backline plenty of problems:

“The pair of them trained last night, along with several other new faces we are having a look at, which was the first time I’ve had a chance to work with the players on some aspects of our play, due to the fixture congestion over Christmas.

“Edji and Adam have come in to improve the squad and help Redditch United win football matches. We’ve won one in 14 fixtures, so it’s vital that we get a win under our belts and put smiles back on the supporters’ faces.”

In terms of team news, Harris is looking to bring in at least one new player with Vanarama National League North experience. Meanwhile, Farnborough will be without veteran and former Football League striker, Jamie Cureton, who signed for division rivals, Bishops Stortford, this week.
