Generous Canaries lead the way

By David Watters

The EVO-STIK League Southern's clubs are lining up to support Non-League Day 2016 with Hitchin Town leading the way after the Canaries announced they'd be donating a share of the gate from their 'pay what you want' fixture to Prostate Cancer UK.

Mark Burke's EVO-STIK League Southern side are hosting Biggleswade United at Top Field in The Emirates FA Cup and the Canaries are planning to hand over 10 per cent of the gate receipts of the first qualifying round clash with the South Midlands League outfit to Non League Day's designated charity.

A club spokesman said: "With the full support of Biggleswade United it has also been agreed that 10 per cent of the gate receipts will be donated to Prostate Cancer UK, the chosen charity of Non-League Day. So please come along and see how enjoyable Non-League football can be while at the same time supporting an important charity. We particularly want to attract fans who normally watch League football so they can experience what Non-League football has to offer at a very fair price."

Launched in 2010 by former BBC Sport journalist James Doe, Non-League Day is now in its seventh season. As always, it is being held during one of the international breaks in football's calendar to give fans of Premier League and Championship clubs the chance to watch football at their local Non-League clubs.

To qualify for free or heavily discounted admission to matches at participating clubs, all supporters have to do is produce a valid season ticket at the turnstiles. In some cases, clubs are even extending admission offers to new fans who bring along utility bills proving they live locally. Others are using the day to offer free or discounted admission to members of the armed forces and emergency services.
