Fund for former star tops £100,000

More than 2,500 donations have flooded in from around the world for father-of-two Jamie Mines who was forced to have a leg and both hands amputated to save his life after a workplace accident in Swindon before Christmas.

Footballing and sports celebrities led by Alan Shearer, Michael Owen, Burnley boss Sean Dyche and boxer Joe Calzaghe have all recorded messages of support to help publicise the worldwide efforts and lift the spirits for the former Radstock, Larkhall and Paulton Rovers forward.

The GoFundMe page to raise money to help pay for care and support for the scaffolder and his family has also received a £1000 donation from the boss of the Professional Footballers' Association, Gordon Taylor.

Clubs around the EVO-STIK League Southern and across the country including Frome, Salford City, Slough Town, St Albans City, Bath City, Warminster, Westbury United, Bradford Town, Larkhall Athletic, Shepton Mallett and Kettering Town to name but a few, have all held bucket collections for the 33-year-old in recent weeks.

Matt Cooper and Ben Gascoigne, two former teammates of Mines now living and playing in Australia, also raised £6,000 on a charity run with their new teammates down under after hearing about their mate's plight.

Frome Town#s fans, players and officials are now hoping to add to the total on Sunday 19 March when they host an all-day 12-team charity tournament and auction at their Berkley Road Special Effect Stadium.

Mines, the father of twin baby daughters, remains in intensive care after the industrial accident which is being investigated by The Health and Safety Executive. As well as losing one leg, doctors were also forced to remove all the toes from his remaining foot in a series of operations to save his life after he was rescued from scaffolding by firefighters and place in an induced coma.
