AN IDEA?
‘The opening ceremony was good, although I missed it.’ Graeme La Saux.
Before Christmas the BBC did some items about the value of singing – a fairly natural activity that furthers personal and community wellbeing but is being revived due to the popularity of projects like the military wives’ choirs and groups that sing at sports fixtures.
In football we still hear singing during games where there are big crowds and ‘You’ll never walk alone’ at Liverpool and ‘I’m forever blowing bubbles’ at West Ham Utd probably being the best known. In lower leagues it doesn’t always get much beyond taunting opposing fans with ‘ You only sing when you’re winning! ’If you google ‘BBC – the value of singing’ you can find out more, not least the 92,000 singing ‘Abide with me’ in harmony at the 1927 Wembley Cup Final.
This has prompted an idea that Diamonds might be able to introduce something new to lower league football by finding a few folk willing to form a fairly informal ‘choir’ that would perhaps sing on a few games during the season before kick off or even as players enter the pitch. Christmas is an obvious time but it could also happen, with agreement, at other times especially at a final or similar occasion
Can see the ' Battle of the Choirs ' should they face Merthyr next season ? An interesting sing along ??
No doubt other clubs will watch with interest and maybe follow suit..
