Clements agrees to save Saints

New St Neots Town manager Matt Clements saw his side slip to a narrow defeat in his first game at the helm of the EVO-STIK League Southern's Saints on Bank Holiday Monday.

Saints remain fourth from bottom of the EVO-STIK League Southern's top flight after their 1-0 defeat at Dunstable Town following the appointment of Clements over the New Year as the successor to Andy Davies at Rowley Park.

The former Godmanchester Rovers and Hardwick boss was number two at Histon earlier this season and has been tasked with securing the club's Step 3 status while putting in place a blueprint for the club to continue to progress. The 38-year-old former West Ham youth player lists Cambridge United, Cambridge City, Sudbury Town, Kings Lynn Town and Needham Market among his former clubs.

Assistant manager Lee Clarke and recently-arrived player-coach Dan Gleeson have both left the club after their short spell as caretaker managers over Christmas.

St Neots director of football Iain Parr said: "Once again we have been fortunate to have been inundated with CV's regarding the position. That said, we decided that we would approach Matt, who we had spoken to in January 2016, as we feel his understanding of the club's infrastructure and his ambition would be a good fit.

“Matt is regarded technically as a very bright manager, great coach and man-manager and with the right club has the potential to excel at Step 3 and beyond."

Davies, who called time on his reign at the Premier Plus Stadium after taking over as caretaker for the second half of the last season before going on to secure the club's top flight status, is continuing in his full-time role managing the club's academy.
