Bank Holiday Monday's Central Division review

By David Watters

Four of the top five in the EVO-STIK League Southern Division One Central won on Bank Holiday Monday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Leaders Royston Town maintained their three-point advantage over second-placed Farnborough after a comfortable 3-0 win against Arlesey Town at Garden Walk.

John Frendo broke the deadlock seven minutes into the second half, and then Spyros Mentis and Josh Castiglione added two late goals in the final seven minutes.

Farnborough edged out mid-table Ashford Town (Middx) 2-1 at the Rushmoor Community Stadium in front of 379.

Kamaron English had the Tangerines in front on the half-hour mark but a Dan Fleming own goal nine minutes after half-time and then Nic Ciardini 18 minutes from time, sealed Boro`s win.

Barton Rovers moved into third spot after beating the team who held that place at kick-off, Kempston Rovers, at Hillgrounds.

Goals in the final nine minutes from Michael Malcolm and Connor Calcutt won it for the visitors.

Marlow also slipped above Kempston into fourth after a 3-1 win at Chalfont St Peter in which Charlie Barton bagged a brace in the eighth and 25th minutes and Nathan Poulton the other for Marlow to lead 3-0 by the 38th minute.

Dean McDonnell reduced the arrears just before the break, but defences tightened in the second and there were no further goals.

Potters Bar Town moved to sixth, four points behind Kempston after a 4-1 success at Honeycroft against Uxbridge.

Eoin Casey`s 17th minute effort for the visitors was the only first half goal, but just three minutes into the second period, Ashley Nathaniel-George doubled Town`s lead.

Then two goals in a minute near the end from Casey again and Joe Bennett took the game away from the Reds, whose Wayne Carter netted an 88th minute consolation.

Bottom side Petersfield Town ended a run of seven consecutive defeats by holding Fleet Town to a 2-2 Love Lane draw.

It didn`t look good for the hosts though when Pat Cox gave Fleet a first-minute lead. But Billy Connor levelled within five minutes and Adam Cripps gave the home side a 32nd minute lead. Josh Harfield restored parity four minutes after the break but Petersfield held on for only their ninth point of the season.

They are now level with second-bottom Histon, although both are twelve points adrift of the safety-mark.

The Stutes lost 5-2 at the New Eyrie to Bedford Town, whose Lee Roache helped himself to four of the goals, two in each half. Femi Orenuga scored the Eagles' other goal after Ben Yeomans from the spot and Tommy Wright had pulled Histon back on level terms by the 64th minute.

Aylesbury United were the day`s other winners, edging a seven-goal thriller at lowly Kidlington, whose Anaclet Odhiambo bagged a brace, as did Ollie Hogg for the Ducks, who also had Bruno Lobo De Brito and Reece Cameron on target.

The game at Chestnut Avenue between Northwood and Hanwell Town ended 1-1 in which Dean Allen`s 48th minute opener for the visitors was finally levelled three minutes into stoppage time by Woods` James Budden.
