Cirencester Town hit Shortwood for 6 !!

By David Simpson

Positive performance

Cirencester faced fellow Gloucestershire side Shortwood United for this mid-week fixture looking to put Saturday’s late loss to 2nd placed Salisbury behind them and this they surely did with a dominant performance and six goals.

The home side started very positively and dominated possession but it took until the 29th minute for them to open the scoring when the prolific BEN WHITEHEAD fired into the top left corner from the right side of the Shortwood penalty area.

Within ten minutes they doubled their lead as ALAN GRIFFIN was quick to react in the 6 yard box to force a knock down home from a couple of yards.

As the interval approached Shortwood were offered a life-line when a pass from defence went astray and was quickly fed to JACK FREEMAN who confidently tucked it inside the left post.

Cirencester regained their 2-goal cushion shortly after the re-start following a corner kick and quick reactions from the predatory BEN WHITEHEAD who headed home from a couple of yards after Alex Albert’s shot was parried into his path.

On the hour a visiting defender slipped near the front edge of his penalty area and Cirencester took full advantage as Whitehead’s first effort was blocked but he was able to regain the rebound and feed it to ALAN GRIFFIN at the far post for another ‘tap-in’.

BEN WHITEHEAD completed his hat-trick a few minutes later after some neat approach play created room for him to smash the ball inside the left post from the edge of the box.

Ten minutes later a misplaced clearance kick was collected by HENRY SPALDING and he wasted no time in driving the ball inside the right post to complete the scoring.
