Champions locking horns in decider

By David Watters

The season won't be over for champions Hereford FC and Royston Town on Saturday with the clubs getting ready to bring the curtain down on their campaigns in an EVO-STIK League Southern Division One Championship play-off.

Billed as the ‘Championship Match’ between the winners of the EVO-STIK League's Southern Division One Central and Division One South & West when it was announced in January, the Bulls are set to host the Crows at Edgar Street on Saturday 29 April after their superior points total won them home advantage.

When a similar match was staged in 1959, Hereford won the North Western section of the Southern League but lost 2-1 to South Eastern winners Bedford Town in a ‘grand championship decider’. This season's revived fixture, taking place on the same day as the Southern League Challenge Cup Final between St Ives Town and Hayes and Yeading United - will see a trophy presented to the winners with medals awarded to players and officials.

The Bulls, who are keeping alive an Edgar Street tradition of parading a Hereford Bull ahead of big games on Saturday when they collect their championship silverware after hosting Winchester City, will complete a unique 'Treble' if they can overcome the Crows and lift the HFA County Challenge Cup next week after winning promotion for the second season running.

Bull Ronaldo, pictured, has already appeared at Edgar Street for the club's first ever league match against Dunkirk in August 2015 before making history when he was given permission to parade around the pitch at Wembley ahead of the 2016 FA Vase Final in front of 20,000 Hereford fans.
