Brakes are off for new stadium

By David Watters

EVO-STIK League Southern Leamington are looking forward to moving into brand new community stadium with the help of their local authority after winning a key vote.

The promotion-chasing Brakes still have plenty to celebrate over Easter despite defeat at Biggleswade Town on Good Friday handing the title to champions Chippenham Town after their joint proposal with Warwick District Council to build a 5,000 capacity stadium was given the go-ahead by local councillors.

Planned as a brand new sports and community hub for the area, fans of the EVO-STIK League Southern Premier Division club can look forward to a new home nearer the town centre featuring the latest artificial turf surface, conference facilities, a gym, bar, café and other community facilities.

Under the proposals which were approved by local politicians on Wednesday night, the stadium will also be at the centre of its own mini community with the project funded with a number of possible developments including a new primary school, community hall, hotel, medical centre, pub, local shops and housing.

Leamington chairman Jim Scott, who recommended the plans to fans and shareholders last week, said: “Leamington FC very much welcomes this key step forward. A new stadium with improved access and facilities will help us fulfil our aspirations to move into higher leagues.

“It will also allow us to develop and expand our presence in the community through our programme of football related activities. This will give more people the opportunity to get involved, be it as a player, spectator or user of the facilities.”

The leader of Warwick District Council, Cllr Andrew Mobbs added: “These exciting and ambitious plans, will not only help to secure the future of our local football club, but have the potential to bring a new focal point for the community with huge benefits for the health, fitness and well-being of our residents.”
