Boxing Day's Premier Division review

By David Watters

Leamington could only manage a point from their derby against Stratford Town on Boxing Day but still head into the New Year holding a five-point lead at the top of the EVO-STIK League Southern's Premier Division table, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In front of a crowd of 805 at the New Windmill Ground, Richard Gregory opened the scoring for the Brakes against his former club in the 25th minute. But the home side weren`t able to capitalise and in the end, Kieren Westwood`s 83rd minute equaliser earned the visitors a good point.

Both Hitchin Town and Merthyr Town won, dropping Chippenham Town down to fourth after they were held to a draw.

A crowd of 613 at Top Field saw Hitchin beat Dunstable Town with goals in the final seven minutes from Kieran Barnes and Ben Walster.

Merthyr won by the same scoreline at Penydarren Park against bottom-markers Cinderford Town in front of 784, Ian Traylor bagging a brace for the Martyrs in the 24th and 30th minutes.

Chippenham were held to a 3-3 thriller at the Corinium Stadium by fifth-bottom Cirencester Town.

Eastleigh loanee Tony Lee bagged a second successive brace for Ciren in the third and 46th minutes, sandwiched by a James Guthrie reply five minutes before the break.

Andy Sandell equalised on 69 minutes and then David Pratt gave the visitors a 74th minute lead that Alan Griffin eventually cancelled out four minutes into stoppage time.

Sixth-placed Frome Town also dropped a couple of points in a 1-1 home draw with Basingstoke Town, whose Aaron Jarvis put them in front after 16 minutes. Ollie Knight restored parity in the 65th minute.

Seventh-placed Redditch United and eighth-placed Banbury United shared a 0-0 draw, as did second-bottom Cambridge City with landlords St Ives Town.

Managerless neighbours St Neots Town were hammered 5-0 at home by Biggleswade Town, for whom Inih Effiong helped himself to a hat-trick with goals in the 44th, 58th and 83rd minutes, with Connor Hall on 67 minutes and Craig Daniel in stoppage time, making it a nap hand for the Waders.

Chesham United also hit five in a 5-2 win at the Meadow against a fast-falling Kings Langley side.

Steve Ward gave the visitors a 34th minute lead that Barry Hayles cancelled out right on half-time.

Mat Mitchell-King gave the Generals a 48th minute lead that Hayles added to on 69 minutes, only for Ryan Plowright to reduce the deficit five minutes later. But goals in the final 3 minutes from Dave Pearce from the spot and Sam Youngs completed the scoring.

Biggest crowd of the day – 2,033 – saw Dorchester Town and Weymouth share the Dorset derby spoils in which Nathan Walker`s penalty right on half-time was cancelled out by Chris Shephard on the hour-mark.

Kettering Town and King`s Lynn Town also shared a 1-1 draw at Latimer Park in which Aaron O`Connor`s 63rd minute opener for the Poppies was levelled five minutes later by Tom Ward.
