Banbury United Social Group Partnership

Banbury United’s partnership with Age UK Oxfordshire, to provide a Social Group to be held fortnightly in the Clubhouse has proved, after the first two sessions, to be a big success. The Social Group is aimed primarily at those in retirement who perhaps miss the company of work-mates and would welcome the chance to come along to meet some new people. The last session saw around 20 in attendance.

The actual sessions are run by activity workers from Age UK Oxfordshire and going forward are likely to consist of quizzes, indoor floor games, talks and many other activities as the social group develops. It is not a football social group but a general friendship and social group. It is free entry. The football club provide teas, coffees, cold drinks, biscuits and cakes at no charge and can help with transport needs.

Libby Griffin, Community Networker, at Age UK Oxfordshire commented “We were approached by Banbury United to see if there was an opportunity for us to work together to provide a service for older members of the community. This seemed an excellent chance to put together a new social group with varied fun activities using the football club’s facilities. I am delighted at how the first two sessions have gone, there has been a good attendance and everyone has enjoyed themselves.”

Community Director and Vice Chairman at Banbury United, Martin Cantrell was equally pleased with the early sessions and added “As a supporters owned and local community focused club we are always looking to use our facilities and to provide whatever help we can with deserving local projects. This is an ideal such project for us to be involved with and we at the club are delighted to see so many at the first two sessions and all having so much fun.”

Though attendance at the first two sessions have been good, both Age UK Oxfordshire and Banbury United would be delighted to see more at the next session on Wednesday 19th July or subsequent fortnightly sessions from 10.30am to midday.
