Attack minded approach

Swindon Supermarine interim manager Lee Spalding promises a more attack-minded approach this weekend as they go in search of three vital play-off chasing points at home to Shortwood Utd

Under Spalding, Marine were unbeaten in four outings until their 0-1 defeat away last Saturday at runaway leaders Taunton Town, in a game in which they did enough to warrant at least a share of the points.

Having now dropped to tenth place in the Southern League – West Division, though with games in hand on several teams above them, draws are not enough and a win against the team sat sixteenth in the standings is imperative if they are to remain within touching distance of the play-off places.

“On Saturday we have to be more attack minded and take off the handbrake,” Spalding said looking ahead to the game, “We want to make a mark, be more on the front foot with an attacking threat. We must still be hard to beat but we have to win games now not draw.”

Shortwood arrive at The Webbs Wood Stadium unbeaten in four games, most recently drawing 1-1 at home to Yate Town last weekend in a game dominated by the visitors, who eventually grabbed their equaliser in injury time.

Prior to this they have improved their form since a disappointing start to the first half of the season, achieving a very credible 3-3 away draw at Taunton in January and Spalding and his squad must be fully aware that their opponents will be no pushover, as they found out in early December when Paul Meredith’s side beat Marine at Meadowbank Stadium 3-1, employing the tactic of getting many players behind the ball before then hitting their opponents on the break, which on that cold Tuesday night on a boggy pitch worked out well for them.
