We're just as good as Salisbury, insists Davis

By Jack Moore

WINCHESTER City boss Craig Davis spoke of the need for one or two defence-minded players in the wake of Friday night’s incredible 5-4 home defeat by Salisbury in the Evo-Stik League South, West.

The Citizens proved they are not short of attacking talent when they powered three up through Joe Cook, Jamie Barron and Oli Bailey in front of a bumper 623 crowd.

But, having been pegged back to 3-3, they reclaimed the lead through Bailey with 11 minutes to go, only to be undone by two late goals.

ewis Benson made it 4-4 with a quality free-kick and the winner was a fluke cross from Tom Whelan.

“Our performance going forward, particularly first half, was absolutely outstanding,” said Davis. “They didn’t know how to handle it.

“We are better going forward than we are at the back, there’s no two ways about it.

“We get ahead in games and maybe we need to think about one or two players who are a bit more defensive-minded and a bit more experienced to see games through.

“At the moment we’re leading games but not getting the points we need.

“Until we rectify that we’ll be a decent side, in and around it, but for me we’re good enough to be right up there.

“Salisbury have nearly gone second and, if anyone has watched that today and thinks we’re not as good as them, I’m not having that. We more than matched them.

“It’s was an extremely disappointing result, but the game was a good advert for the Southern League.”

Benson and former Winchester City skipper Stuart Green each scored twice for Salisbury, who sit just a point adrift of second-placed Bristol Manor Farm.
