Kettering Town`s hopes of finishing second in the Evo-Stik League South Premier – and a home play-off semi-final – now hangs by a thread after they suffered a 3-2 Latimer Park defeat in the Tuesday night rain to Tiverton Town.
The Devonians were looking like making a decent run to the play-offs themselves until a poor run of form at the turn of the year.
But, able to relax and play football in front of a crowd of 519, Tivvy came back from being a 33rd minute Matt Stevens goal down at half-time to win.
Top scorer Levi Landricombe eventually equalised in the 72nd minute and then put his side in front 10 minutes later, with Jordan Rogers making it 3-0 within seconds.
A Brett Solkhon penalty gave the Poppies fans hope of a comeback, which they almost achieved but Solkhon`s effort was cleared off the line in stoppage time.
Kettering dropped to fourth as a consequence of their defeat and Slough Town`s 4-0 win at Garden Walk against sixth-placed Royston Town.
The Crows have enjoyed a tremendous first season at this level but the Rebels had that little more incentive on the night, and they went 3-0 up inside the opening 20 minutes with goals from Warren Harris with two and Perry Coles.
And a James Dobson effort 5 minutes from time added a fourth for Jon Underwood and Neil Baker`s side to give them a chance of finishing second, being now just a point behind King`s Lynn Town.
Dunstable Town gave their chances of staying up a massive boost with a 2-0 win at a tired-looking Biggleswade Town outfit at Langford Road.
Goals from Ethan Lamptey after 13 minutes and Daniel Trif after 67 minutes sets up tomorrow`s massive `six-pointer` clash with bottom-markers Gosport Borough at Creasey Park superbly.
Boro need a win to take the outcome to the final day.
Elsewhere, Chesham United won 2-0 at Westwood Road against St Ives Town, thanks to Jon-Jo Bates after 28 minutes and Matt Bevans 17 minutes from time, while Bishop`s Stortford inflicted a 4-0 defeat on Merthyr Town at the ProKit Stadium with goals from Alfie Mason and Darren Foxley in the first half and veteran Jamie Cureton and Foxley again in the second period.
