The book covers the entire history of the current club which was formed in 1928 and its predecessor, Hitchin FC, which dates back to 1865.
Written by Neil Jensen, a local writer and journalist and former media officer of the club.
Renowned Hitchin-based Spanish football journalist,Guillem Balague, has written the foreword.
Author Neil Jensen comments:
“This book not only builds on previous publications about Hitchin Town, but also attempts to remove some of the myths about the club and its origins. The club has a rich and interesting history and while success has not been forthcoming, there can be no denying the part it plays in the local community. Hitchin Town is the biggest and most important sporting entity in the town and commands great loyalty from its followers. The book attempts to highlight that. I am proud to have been able to bring this story to the public on behalf of the club and its [belated] 150 anniversary celebrations.”
The book highlights some of the most notable events in the club’s history:
- The first FA Cup in 1871-72
- Hitchin winning at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge in 1905, the first away team to win at the London club’s ground
- How the team of the 1930s became one of the most talked about in amateur football
- The day almost 8,000 people crammed into Top Field
- The marvellous team created by Laurie Scott that reached two FA Amateur Cup semi-finals
- Glorious cup runs in the 1970s
- The 1990s wins against Hereford and Bristol Rovers
- The current era under Mark Burke
There will be a book signing event on Saturday December 2, 2017 between 10.00 and 1pm at Hawkins of Hitchin in Bucklesbury.
