Sporting challenge for thirsty fans!

A sporting community day on Sunday at the home of the EVO-STIK League Southern's Canaries will see the running of the first ever Hitchin Beer Mile and Milk Mile.

After travelling to take on Kettering on Saturday in the EVO-STIK League Southern's top flight, Top Field is set host the club's inaugural fun-fundraising challenge that will see fans running laps around the ground and drinking beer or milk at the end of each one!

Running from 12pm to 3pm, the Canaries are staging the event to bring together sporting organisations from across Hitchin and raise funds for improvements to Top Field. According to organisers, their main aim is to see everybody "have a great day out".

A club spokesman said: "It will be a fun day and spectators are welcome. The event runs from 12 to 3pm and you can still enter on the day with registration starting from 11am.

"Beer or milk is drunk at the start of each of the four laps of Top Field and the fastest time will win. There are different categories for males, females and U16s. It is only £8 for adults and £4 for under 18s and all profits go to the ground improvement fund."

The Canaries, who are staging their annual youth day at Top Field on Saturday 24 September when they host Merthyr, also held a meeting of representatives from the club's various sections this week to look at coming together to attain the Football Association's Charter Standard Community Award status.

"It was an encouraging meeting as the various sections came together with the aim of creating one club all working together," added the spokesman. "The long term objective is to attain Charter Standard Community Award status and to produce a five year development plan."
