Slimbridge take big step towards Survival

Buzzing changing room

Slimbridge still have work to do, but Wednesday's 3-1 home win over Kidlington went a long way to securing another season of Southern League football.

Goals from Luke Payne, Jack Twyman and Henry Birkett helped Freddy Ward's men move 10 points clear of bottom club Bishop's Cleeve, who have two games in hand.

It has been a tough time for the Swans, who had won only once in their previous 21 matches and conceded eight goals on two occasions during that run.

Birkett, who went on from the bench and scored the final goal, said the players dedicated the victory to chairman Barry Gay, who was celebrating his birthday.

"It was great getting that result going into a run of four home games which we fancy picking some points up from," Birkett said.

"The goal came after my first shot was blocked and it came back to me so I just hit it and went into the roof of the net on the volley.

"It was my second game back and being dropped to the bench I was disappointed, but felt I had to give the gaffer a reaction so scoring was the perfect way as he’s asked for us to score more from midfield.

"The changing room was buzzing afterwards and as it was the chairman's birthday, we felt the three points would be the perfect present for him."
