Second Saint set for County switch

The 21-year-old, pictured, trained with the League Two outfit last week and has been given another opportunity to impress in the coming days eight months after Meechan's departure from Rowley Park in February for south Wales.

Hawkins, who's also had a trial at League Two Stevenage since the start of the season, is under contract with the EVO-STIK League Southern Premier Division's Saints until the end of the season so any move would involve a transfer fee for the Cambridgeshire club.

Newport boss Graham Westley is a known admirer of the wideman having offered him a trial back in January when he was in charge of League One outfit Peterborough - only for the player to suffer a season-ending ankle ligament injury. St Neots manager Andy Davies told www.huntspost.co.uk on Monday that the club would support the player's ambitions after Westley took the opportunity to keep him until the end of the week.

Davies said: “Graham was keen on having a look at Ryan when he was managing Posh last season. Unfortunately Ryan got injured just as it came about and ended up missing the rest of the season. But Graham has clearly remembered him and requested the chance to have another look at him at Newport.

“Ryan was down there last week and he’ll be training with them again this week. I’m expecting a call from Graham towards the end of this week and we’ll see how we take things from there. But I, like everyone at St Neots, wishes Ryan well and hope he can earn a move into the Football League. Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than seeing a young player progress in the game.”
