Gordon Hadley, pictured, owns the first season ticket ever to be issued by Chelmsford City from the team's founding year of 1938. Labelled with a large number one, it was sold in 1938 for fixtures through to 1939 and was given to him by his father, who received it from his adoptive grandfather.
Thought to be worth thousands to a collector, the 62-year-old wants to pass the family heirloom on to his three-year-old grandson Thomas but is planning to sell it if he cannot get NHS treatment for a rare liver condition and hepatitis because he is ruled too weak to undergo conventional treatment.
He told the Essex Chronicle: "That's a greater gift than the money, so I hope I won't have to sell it. It's been through a lot and I've preserved it."
City superseded amateur club Chelmsford FC, who were wound up when officials opted to form a professional club to get Southern League status. The club adopted the suffix City for their debut season even though Chelmsford the town did not acquire city status until 2012. The club are now members of National League South.
