He scored against Scotland at Wembley as a schoolboy – but as far as achievements go, keeping St Ives Town in the Southern Premier will do for Danny Watson.
The former Fulham youth striker was a business studies student at Bedford College, having just been released by the Cottagers, when he was called up by England Schoolboys.
But a decade on from playing alongside the likes of Chris Smalling, Watson is happy to consign that to the memory bank and make more happy ones with St Ives.
Playing for England Schoolboys was a real experience – Chris Smalling was our skipper and there was also Micky Demetriou, who played for Newport against Spurs in the FA Cup,” said Watson.
“I played 12 times for them, twice at Wembley, which will live long in the memory. I scored against Scotland at Wembley, and it doesn’t get better than that. The memory will live with me for ever, but I don’t dwell on it.
“I’m in a different walk of life now. Work takes priority once you miss your opportunity, you get your head down and keep going. It was good to have played with players of that calibre, but now I’ve got to do my own thing.
“It would mean more to me to help keep St Ives playing at this level as I was part of the team that got us into the Southern Premier two years ago. It’s an achievement us just being here, and we're determined to keep it that way.”
