Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

With most teams having just three matches left to play, there are still plenty of issues to settle yet in the EVO-STIK League Southern's Premier Division following Saturday`s round of matches, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Chippenham Town require just two points from their final three matches to clinch the title after a fine 3-1 win at Top Field against third-placed Hitchin Town.

A crowd of 812 saw the Bluebirds take an 11th minute lead through Nuno Felix and then Rhys Baggridge doubled that on the half-hour mark. Will Wright reduced the deficit just before half-time, but Will Richards made sure of the points for the visitors with a third in the 57th minute.

Chippenham were heartened after the game when they received the news that second-placed Leamington had dropped two points at the New Windmill Ground against relegation-threatened Kings Langley.

The fifth-bottom outfit held on for a 0-0 draw to be two points above the drop zone. Leamington are, at least, assured of a play-off place.

Fourth-placed Slough Town still have a bit to do, however, after suffering a 3-0 defeat at Latimer Park against inconsistent Kettering Town.

A crowd of 521 saw James Brighton break the deadlock seven minutes after half-time and Liam Canavan put them two-up on the hour-mark, with Rene Howe adding a third two minutes into stoppage time.

Merthyr Town hold the final play-off spot but by just a point from Banbury United after both won away on Saturday.

The Martyrs were 3-1 winners at a St Neots Town side who are still not safe, being four points in front of the drop zone.

A Taylor Parr own goal gave the Welsh side an early second minute boost, only for Declan Rogers after 15 minutes and the experienced Lee Clarke on 33 minutes to turn it round in the Saints favour. But a great comeback saw Jarrad Wright level in the 83rd minute and then Ian Traylor win it two minutes from time.

Banbury were 2-1 winners at Causeway against already-relegated Cinderford Town.

Luke Carnell gave the Puritans an early fifth minute lead that Manny Duku eventually doubled 11 minutes from time, with Craig Norman netting a Foresters consolation five minutes later.

After Hayes & Yeading United`s Friday loss, Cambridge City gave themselves a massive boost with a 3-0 win at the Corinium Stadium against second-bottom Cirencester Town to move to within a point of United and three of the safety-mark.

Dan Walker after just eight minutes, then Ollie Snaith on 77 minutes and Fotsing Pitoula Wabo three minutes later, sealed the City win.

Elsewhere, a Stephane Zubar double ensured Jason Matthews’ final league game in charge of Weymouth ended in victory at St Ives Town.

Zubar scored twice in the final 12 minutes after Ben Seymour-Shove had given the Saints a 12th minute lead to send his player-manager home with three points on his final away venture for the club. Matthews is set to leave his position after Tuesday’s Dorset Senior Cup final.

Marcus Mapstone`s 37th minute effort eventually proved enough for Frome Town at home to Dunstable Town, while goals from Rhys Hoenes and Michael Richens sandwiched by a Dave Pearce penalty reply, saw Biggleswade Town to a 2-1 win at Chesham United.

Jake Mawford put Dorchester Town in front 12 minutes from time at the Avenue Stadium against King`s Lynn Town, whose Michael Clunan equalised from the spot four minutes later to make it 1-1.

Luke Keen salvaged a point for Redditch United 15 minutes from time after Zaqib Hussain`s eighth minute opener for the Reds had been overturned by Basingstoke Town`s Aaron Jarvis and Matt Partridge.
