Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Chippenham Town show no signs of slipping up as they are seven points clear at the top of the EVO-STIK League Southern Premier Division table following Saturday`s round of matches, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Bluebirds won 2-1 at the Camrose against youthful Basingstoke Town, who trailed to Matt Smith`s early second minute opener.

Ashleigh Artwell equalised within five minutes though, but Andy Sandell`s 13th minute second proved to be enough for the visitors in the end.

Merthyr Town`s 2-1 Penydarren Park defeat by Frome Town allowed Hitchin Town and Slough Town to slip above them into second and third respectively.

Connor Roberts put Frome in front after 24 minutes. Recent signing Jack Crompton pulled the Martyrs back on terms on 63 minutes, only for Sam Teale to net what proved to be the winner for the Somerset side just four minutes later.

Slough increased Dorchester Town`s relegation worries with a comprehensive 4-0 win at the Avenue Stadium.

Manny Williams after six minutes and James Dobson on 37 minutes had the Rebels in control at the break. Dobson confirmed victory with a third 15 minutes from time, with Ramone Rose adding icing on the cake with a fourth in stoppage time.

Hitchin enjoyed a comfortable 5-0 Top Field win over King`s Lynn Town to show how big a task Ian Culverhouse has on hands at The Walks!

The game was all over bar the shouting at half-time in front of a crowd of 517 as Callum Donnelly, Robbie Burns, Matt Lench and Lucas Kirkpatrick had the Canaries 4-0 up. Burns' second came within two minutes of the restart, threatening a real hammering, but that was how the scoreline remained in the end.

Leamington dropped points in fifth after sharing a 1-1 draw at the ProKit against fourth-bottom Cambridge City.

Oliver Snaith gave the strugglers a 22nd minute lead that Jack Edwards cancelled out within eight minutes. But the Brakes weren`t able to find a winner in difficult conditions.

Banbury United are eight points behind their neighbours in sixth, but won 1-0 at the Spencer Stadium against St Ives Town, courtesy of a last-gasp Ricky Johnson effort.

It`s looking like the current top five are going to have to lose form rapidly for the chasing pack to overtake them.

Two of those teams, inconsistent duo Kettering Town and Chesham United, met at Latimer Park where the visitors ran out 2-1 winners in front of 517.

New signing Philip Roberts bagged a brace for the Generals and Sam Young a third as they led 3-0 at the break, with Rene Howe reducing the deficit on 66 minutes.

At the other end of the table, bottom-markers Cinderford Town picked up another point from a 1-1 home draw with Redditch United, whose Luke Rodgers levelled a minute into stoppage time at the end of the game after Sammie Hicks had given the Foresters a 75th minute lead.

Second-bottom Hayes & Yeading United also picked up a useful point in a 2-2 draw at the Bob Lucas Stadium against Weymouth.

Graeme Montgomery just before the break and Dylan Kearney just after it, had the visitors two-up before Mark Cooper on the hour-mark and Stuart Fleetwood pulled the Terras level.

Cirencester Town completed the set of all of the bottom four drawing after a 1-1 outcome at Creasey Park against Dunstable Town.

The hosts led through Josh Oyinsan`s 31st minute opener until the fifth minute of time added on at the end of the match when Kerry Morgan popped up with Ciren`s late leveller.

Jamie Spencer`s 12th minute goal proved enough in the end for Stratford Town at home to Biggleswade Town, while St Neots Town moved three points clear of the drop zone after a 5-1 home win over the team now just above them on goal difference, Kings Langley.

A Jevani Brown brace and one from Fernando Bell-Toxtle gave the Saints a 3-0 interval lead. Michael King cut that two minutes after the break and then Brown completed his hat-trick in the last minute. Two more goals followed in stoppage time – a second for Hitchin loanee King and a Gary Connolly own goal to make it a nap hand for the Saints.
