Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

The eight games in the EVO-STIK League Southern's Premier Division on Saturday produced 36 goals between them, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The exception was at the Special Effects Stadium where leaders Leamington were held to a goalless draw by hosts Frome Town.

The Brakes now lead the table by seven points, with second-placed Slough Town inactive and third-placed Chippenham Town being held to a 2-2 draw at Biggleswade Town, whose Inih Effiong gave them a great start with a penalty conversion inside three minutes.

However, it was the 89th minute when the Waders scored their second through Callum Lewis after two goals in two minutes midway through the second half from David Pratt and Andy Sandell had given the Bluebirds the lead.

Merthyr Town are fifth and went nap at home to Kings Langley, who were making their first trip to Penydarren Park.

Ryan Prosser opened the scoring after 12 minutes and then Kayne McLaggon bagged a brace on 29 and 41 minutes to make it 3-0 at the break. Late goals in the 90th and 95th minutes from Ian Traylor and Ben Watkins respectively sealed a 5-0 scoreline.

Banbury United matched the Martyrs as they won by the same score at the Spencer Stadium against third-bottom Hayes & Yeading United to go seventh. Worryingly for Hayes & Yeading, that`s 11 goals conceded in their last two matches.

The Puritans were two-up by the fourth minute through Jack Westbrook and Callum White, with Ricky Johnson making it 3-0 on the quarter-hour mark. Conor McDonagh on 71 minutes and Darius Browne two minutes from time made it a nap hand for the hosts.

Kettering Town went one better at the Corinium Stadium against fifth-bottom Cirencester Town, winning 6-1 and move into eighth place.

Like Banbury, the Poppies got off to a great start when Rene Howe and Aaron O`Connor had them two-up inside three minutes. James Haran and James Brighton made it 4-0 with only 22 minutes gone on the clock before Dan Demikiv reduced the deficit two minutes later. But Haran again on 52 minutes and Matthew Barnes-Homer on 64 minutes stretched the visitors lead to 6-1.

Fourth-bottom St Neots Town suffered a 5-2 defeat at Stratford Town.

The home side raced into a 3-0 lead by the 13th minute with goals from Liam Francis, Michael Taylor and an Edwin Akenkorah spot-kick. Ahenkorah went on to complete his hat-trick in the 44th and 47th minutes, with the Saints `winning` the second half with goals from Declan Rogers after 74 minutes and Nassim L`Ghoul in stoppage time.

Chesham United, fresh from hitting six against Hayes & Yeading last time out, won 4-0 at the Meadow against midtable Basingstoke Town.

The Generals, who have games in hand on most above them, took a 1-0 lead through Brad Watkins` 32nd minute effort into the break. Drew Roberts doubled their advantage eight minutes after the break and he scored a third on 71 minutes, with Sam Youngs making it 4-0 with seven minutes remaining.

St Ives Town moved further away from the drop zone after a good 2-1 home win against sixth-placed Redditch United.

Josh Dawkin gave the Saints an early fifth minute lead that Danny Kelly eventually doubled 12 minutes after the break. Luke Keen pulled the Reds back into the game in the 64th minute but the Saints held on for three useful points.
