And the Bluebirds retained top spot after a remarkable comeback from The Saints racing into a 2-0 lead with goals from Tom McGowan after 15 minutes and Harry O`Malley on 34 minutes.
And they held that lead until six minutes from the end when Alex Ferguson reduced the arrears. But even his famous namesake would have been delighted with the Bluebirds late, late response to win the game, David Pratt a minute later and then Alan Griffin in the 87th minute.
Slough Town and Dunstable Town are just a point behind Chippenham after both also enjoyed good away wins.
The Rebels won 4-0 at Redditch United, thanks to Warren Harris after just four minutes, Lee Barney after 33 minutes and then Harris again and Gavin James in the final couple of minutes of the game.
The Duns earned a 3-1 success at Cinderford Town, taking a 13th minute lead through John Sonuga that Jack Camm cancelled out six minutes later.
But Shane Bush after 55 minutes and then Danny Talbot just four minutes later turned the game in the Blues` favour.
Leamington and Frome Town occupy the other top five spots, although the Brakes could only manage a 1-1 draw at the New Windmill Ground against Weymouth, whose Charlie Davis rescued them with an 89th minute penalty after the Brakes had led right from the 19th minute, courtesy of a Ryan Rowe goal.
Frome saw off Biggleswade Town 2-0 at home, thanks to goals from Darren Jefferies after 26 minutes and then a second in the third minute of stoppage time at the end of the game from Jon Davies.
Result of the day though must be Merthyr Town`s 6-1 away win against Hayes & Yeading United.
Problems with Hayes` new ground meant that this match had to be played at Hendon and it obviously affected the `hosts`. They never really recovered from a ninth minute Adam Everitt own goal and were 4-0 down at the break after a Kayne McLaggon brace and one from Rhys Baggridge.
McLaggon completed his hat-trick just after half-time and Ian Traylor threatened a real massacre when he made it 6-0 with half-an-hour still to play. But the only goal after that was an 83rd minute consolation from Lloyd Macklin.
Cirencester Town made it six defeats from eight games after losing 1-0 at the Corinium Stadium to first-time visitors Kings Langley, Lewis Toomey`s goal right on the stroke of half-time eventually proving enough for Kings.
Second-bottom Dorchester Town picked up a point from a 2-2 Avenue Stadium draw with Stratford Town.
Player boss Mark Jermyn`s 15th minute opener for the Magpies was immediately cancelled out by Edwin Ahenkorah. Jamie Sheldon then gave the visitors a 29th minute lead but Chris Dillon`s equaliser two minutes after the break eventually earned the hosts only their fifth point of the season to date.
Brett Donnelly left it late – the 89th minute – to score the only goal of the game at Top Field to earn Hitchin Town all three points against Basingstoke Town`s young side.
And fancied Kettering Town still can`t really get going and had to be content with a point from a 2-2 Latimer Park draw against Banbury United.
Ricky Johnson`s penalty gave the Puritans a 25th minute lead that Rene Howe levelled in the 38th minute. But George Jeacock took Banbury into the break ahead with a second right on the whistle before James Haran pulled the Poppies back on level terms just past the hour-mark.
Chesham United were beaten 2-1 at The Meadow by King`s Lynn Town.
The Generals led through Dave Pearce`s 16th minute effort. Jacek Zielonka equalised on 24 minutes and the Linnets won it through Michael Clunan eight minutes into the second period.
Cambridge City won the derby at St Neots Town 3-0, thanks to goals from Tunde Adewunmi after just three minutes, new signing Dean Mason just six minutes later and then Charlie Wolfe nine minutes from the end.
