Saturday's Evo-Stik South, West Round-Up

By Jack Moore

Only Taunton Town possess a 100 per cent record in the Evo-Stik League South West after they won their third game of the new season at Shortwood.

The visitors took only 7 minutes to break the deadlock when Ryan Brett shot home following a cross by Lewis Powell.

Powell missed a great chance to increase the visitors’ lead – his penalty being saved by Harry Pickering in the 38th minute after Ross Staley had been fouled.

Powell made up for his miss by providing the cross for Pierce Mitchell to turn home for Taunton’s second goal in the 48th minute.

However, the Peacocks were reduced to ten-men in the 71st minute when Matt Villis was sent-off for a foul on Levi Cox, who got up to slot home the resultant penalty to make it 2-1.

AFC Totton, Bideford, Salisbury FC, Larkhall Athletic, Evesham United and Kidlington all suffered their first league defeats of 2017/18.

The Stags were beaten 2-1 at Testwood Park by Slimbridge, for whom Sam Turl and Alex Hoyle had them two-up by the 19th minute – Stuart Mott replying right on half-time.

Bideford also lost at home – 1-0 to Swindon Supermarine, for whom this was a first win after two opening draws – Josh Parsons the scorer after 24 minutes.

Steve Claridge`s Whites lost 2-1 in Oxfordshire against North Leigh, for whom Roger James` brace in the 29th and 80th minutes proved enough, despite Kane O`Keefe`s 65th minute reply.

The Larks were another to lose at home – 2-1 to Winchester City, whose Rob Carr opened the scoring on the hour-mark.

Dan Restorick equalised 5 minutes later, only for Pat Cox to win it for City 12 minutes from time.

Evesham were Paulton Rovers` first victims of the season as goals in each half from Kailan Gould and Sam Hedges proved enough, while Kidlington were edged out at home by the odd goal in five by new boys Bristol Manor Farm.

Kye Holly gave the visitors an early 4th minute lead, but the hosts led 2-1 by the 76th minutes through Darius Browne and Eric Odhiambo.

However, Lloyd Mills levelled a minute from time and then Troy Simpson won it for Farm 5 minutes into stoppage time.

There were first wins for Mangotsfield United and Barnstaple Town on Saturday.

The managerless Mangos inflicted a third successive defeat on Bishops Cleeve at Cossham Street with Steve Davies after 27 minutes and Mike Bryant on 35 minutes being on the mark, while Barum won 3-1 at relegated Cinderford Town with goals from Jordan Charran, Nathan Cooper and Tiegan Rosenquest – Andy Lewis replying from the spot.

Elsewhere, Didcot Town earned a second win, impressively 2-1 at the Corinium Stadium against Cirencester Town with a last-gasp Seth Humphries effort after Louis Joyce had cancelled out Alan Griffin`s 20th minute opener.

And Wimborne Town beat Yate Town 4-2 at home with Toby Holmes bagging a brace with Jack Lovell and Ben Mogg also on the Magpies mark, a Brad Norris spot-kick and Eugene Keary replying in the final 5 minutes.
