But the Diamonds supporters who made the pre-Christmas trip had to wait until 20 minutes from time before Tom Lorraine tapped in from close range and earn his side a seventh win in a row and a two-point lead over AFC Dunstable.
That`s because Dunstable were held to a 2-2 draw at Calthorpe Park by the team immediately above Hanwell in eighteenth spot, Fleet Town.
George Pilbeam gave the Hampshire side a 14th minute lead that new signing Drew Roberts eventually cancelled out from the penalty spot after 64 minutes.
But Chris Wales restored Fleet`s lead in the 81st minute, but less than 3 minutes later, Terry Griffiths earned the visitors an important point.
Beaconsfield Town moved level on points with AFC Dunstable in third after edging out third-bottom Aylesbury United at Holloways Park.
Beaconsfield scored two first half goals, the first by Goldy Capella after 14 minutes, the second from Aaron Minhas on 33 minutes, to take a deserved lead into half-time.
However, a battling second half performance by the struggling Ducks saw them pull level through two well-taken goals from Tre Mitford in the 46th and 78th minutes.
With the game looking destined for a draw, a late free-kick saw Mitch Gutteridge convert at the far post to claim all three points Beaconsfield.
Moneyfields, Cambridge City and Hayes & Yeading United complete the top six picture, although Moneys were beaten on Saturday.
They lost 3-1 at Hillgrounds against a Kempston Rovers` side who are seventh, a point behind the top six.
After trailing to a 10th minute Joe Briggs effort, the Walnut Boys responded to lead 2-1 at the break, courtesy of Jermaine Ivy after 38 minutes and Luke Heneghan right on the whiste.
And then Josh Crawley added a third for the hosts on the hour-mark.
Cambridge and Hayes both won on their travels.
City were 2-1 winners at Ashford Town (Middx), thanks to Ross Paterson on the hour-mark and James Hall less than a minute later – all after Alex Fisher had given the Ash Trees a 55th minute lead.
Hayes triumphed 2-0 at Aylesbury FC, who had won their last three games – all away from home.
But Manny Duku after just 2 minutes and Ismael Ehui after 57 minutes won it for the visitors.
Hartley Wintney dropped to eighth after losing 3-1 at Chestnut Avenue against Northwood, whose Harry Newman put them ahead after 15 minutes and Wilson Chingoka added a second 9 minutes later.
Callum Eagle reduced the deficit 3 minutes later, but a third from Mahlondo Martin in the 86th minute sealed Wood`s win.
Matty Woods’ 5th goal of the season was just enough for Egham Town to record their third win on the spin – and their fourth unbeaten – at Sharpenhoe Road against struggling second-bottom Barton Rovers.
The only team below Barton – last season`s play-off final losers – are Arlesey Town, who are fast becoming detached after going down 1-0 at Marlow, for whom Kelvin Bossman scored the only goal after 36 minutes.
Elsewhere, Dan West continued his good scoring form for father Mark as Thame United won 4-1 at home to Chalfont St Peter.
West scored the opener on the half-hour mark and then the fourth in the 88th as Ellis Hercules on 34 minutes and Adam Morris on 42 minutes, sandwiched his efforts – Victor Osobu replying for the Saints 15 minutes from time.
And Uxbridge won 2-0 at the New Eyrie against Bedford Town, thanks to Prince Mbengui 3 minutes after half-time and Cole Brown on 66 minutes.
