Name change to honour benefactor

Before kicking off against Gloucestershire rivals Forest Green Rovers at the weekend, proud officials formally renamed their Wisloe Road ground in recognition of Evi Thornhill, their former chairman who gifted the EVO-STIK League Southern South and West Division club the land they occupy to this day in his will in February 1960.

Their late chairman's son Tony and his wife Margaret are pictured cutting a ceremonial ribbon to officially rename their new home in front of more than 400 fans who later saw the Swans run their National League opponents close, coming from behind twice with a brace from Sean Lawson before eventually losing 3-2.

The Swans were delighted to honour the man who was the foundation of the club 55 years ago on Saturday.

A spokesman said: "Club secretary Colin Gay made a speech explaining the story behind the ceremony to the 400-odd crowd, and then Tony Thornhill made a heartfelt speech, expressing how much the recognition of the football club meant to himself and his family, and how proud his father would have been at the honour."
